To put a context around Swedish Biedermeier furniture , its useful to know the history of the time when it rose to prominence

Karl Johan, originally Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, became King of Sweden through an unusual and strategic political decision following on from the reign of Karl Gustav.

Bernadotte’s Background in France

Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was a French general under Napoleon Bonaparte and had a successful military career during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Despite a complicated relationship with Napoleon, he gained respect for his leadership and governance.

Sweden’s Need for a Heir

In the early 19th century, Sweden was in a difficult position:

  • King Karl XIII was aging and had no heirs.
  • Sweden had recently lost Finland to Russia in 1809, weakening its power.
  • The Swedish government sought a strong leader who could counterbalance Russia and help Sweden regain influence.

The Unexpected Choice

In 1810, Sweden needed a new heir and, surprisingly, turned to Bernadotte. The reasons:

  • Bernadotte was well-regarded by Swedish officers who had fought alongside him.
  • He had a strong military background, which Sweden needed after losing Finland.
  • He was popular among the Swedish people due to his fair treatment of Swedish prisoners of war.
  • Sweden hoped that by choosing him, they could secure Napoleon’s support for future political moves.

Election as Crown Prince

  • In August 1810, the Swedish Riksdag (parliament) elected Bernadotte as Crown Prince of Sweden.
  • He accepted and converted to Lutheranism, taking the name Karl Johan by which the Swedish Biedermeier furniture genre is now know
  • Although expected to follow Napoleon, he pursued an independent foreign policy, eventually siding with Russia and Britain against Napoleon.

Becoming King of Sweden and Norway

  • He served as regent for the ailing Karl XIII.
  • In 1814, after the Napoleonic Wars, Karl Johan led Sweden in a campaign against Denmark, which resulted in b
  • In 1818, Karl XIII died, and Karl Johan officially became King of Sweden and Norway.

Legacy

Karl XIV Johan ruled until 1844, establishing the House of Bernadotte, which still rules Sweden today. His reign marked stability, modernization, and neutrality in European conflicts. So next tiume you sit on your favourite Swedish Biedermeier sofa or rest your champagne on your Biedermeier table
