See our Gustavian Drawers hereThey provide great and very useable storage on a daily basis but they look amazing with a variety of types of carved decoration on them.
The most ubiquitous are the ribbed Gustavian reeded fronts with the vertical strips followed by the diamond shapes decorative features and the houndstooth check carvings on the top edges.
Each Gustavian Drawer normally has 2 pull rings in brass sometimes simple and sometimes very ornate like lions heads, urns or eagles
and often a central escutcheon with an individual key.
This is then set off by the classic fluted pyramid leg shape that is most dainty or occasionally the lions feet type pediments as above
Gustavian drawers history
In terms of Gustavian history, the term dates back to the reign of Swedish King Karl Gustav who spent a year at the court of french monarch Louis XVI – the famous sun king – where he fell in love with the curves and glamour of the louis XVI furniture.
On ascension to the Swedish throne in 1780 he commissioned a swedish version of what he had seen at the palace of Versailles and this is now the basis of the most much copied “Gustavian” style.
Our 1800s swedish Gustavian commodes all feature fabulous patina finishes in blues whites greys and blacks
