How to Choose a Swedish Biedermeier dining table

So you want to upgrade your dining room but at the same time to do something different.

Change is good and it is great to try new design styles to give the room a new updated and fresh feel.

Biedermeier dining tables are therefore the perfect centre piece for you new dining experience.

Understanding the Biedermeier Style

The original Swedish Biedermeier period ran from 1815–1848 under Swedish King Karl Johan

The Biedermeier style features clean and elegant lines which have a modern feel but with an antique vibe.

Generally the dining tables use light-colored wood veneers on a birch wood frame.

The show woods are usually Golden Birch, Mahogany, Walnut and cherry as they were most readily available in 1800s Sweden.

The veneers often have subtle marquetry inlays or contrasting veneer patterns to make art in your dining room. Very Nice indeed.

The dining table usually has some form of tapered legs or a central pedestal base with leaf extensions to give you the required length. Overall it makes for perfect symmetry and great functionality.

Original Biedermeier or Biedermeier Style

1st Biedermeier antique tables would have been made between 1815 and 1850. They are exceedingly rare and are much better as show tabes rather than for every day use.

2nd Biedermeier meanwhile goes from later 1800s – 1950s – they are much more solid and better for regular dining.

We wouldn’t recommend anything later than 1950s unless it is extremely high quality and well made

Size and Shape

How do you want to dine? How many Guests? What space do you have available to use?

Generally Biedermeier dining tabes are rectangular in shape with either square or oval ends.

There is often a central pedestal to support the table top when no extension leaves are in use and then legs to the extensions or a 2nd pedestal.

The pedestals are usually very decorative with a centra column and 3 or 4 carved feet.

It is normal to have 2 extension leaves but some longer tables can have 3-5 giving a huge length. Great if you want to do mass entertaining but hard to find

To decide on the Biedermeier table length, take a place setting as approx 60-65cm per person for comfortable sitting during dinner

Wood and Finish

Swedish Biedermeier tables almost always feel a french polish finish with a deep lustre to show off the quilted or flame wood grain of the veneers.

It will have a nice subtle sheen that reflects the light and shimmers as you look across it.

Biedermeier Dining Chairs

Pair the Biedermeier table with matching Biedermeier dining chairs in sets of 6 or 8 – if you need more make up a mixed set with different carved ornaents and carver chairs at each end.

Alternatively to counterpoint the table, use 1960s sets of dining chairs
