Swedish Interior Design

With more people working from home on laptop, why shouldn’t you work in style as well as utility?

A Swedish Biedermeier Secretaire is a type of writing desk or secretary desk that was hand made during the Biedermeier period approximately encompassing 1815–1848.

Although the style originated in Central Europe around Germany and Austria, Sweden developed its own distinct version of Biedermeier furniture with restrained Nordic influence during the reign of King Karl Johan.

The construction of your Biedermeier desk or secretaire began with a birch or pine frame that was hand jointed and glued with horse glue. But unlike the more ornate Baroque or Rococo styles, Swedish Biedermeier furniture focused on clean but curvaceous organic lines and functional beauty.

Light Wood Tones

Typically made of local woods such as birch, alder, or mahogany veneer, often with a warm honey-colored finish. The show wood featured fantastic wood grains in quilted, flame or curled patterns and was often book matched for a striking visual expression.

Fine Craftsmanship

High-quality hand applied inlays, greco-roman style marquetry, and subtle decorative details often with contrasting woods to mjake things pop visually.

Drop-Front Desk

The secretaire usually has a drop-front writing surface that when opened revealed a series of 4-10 small drawers with bone handles, one or 2 central pigeonholes, and sometimes even a central mini cabinet.

Great Dimensions

Many include a 3 or 4 drawer chest of drawers below the writing surface or sometimes a display cabinet or bookcase on top of the desk too.

Neoclassical Influences

While simpler than earlier neoclassical styles, Swedish Biedermeier pieces often retain a symmetrical and well-proportioned design which is easy on the eye and allows massive storage and utility in a small space.

Delicate Hardware

Ornate carved keyholes, locks, and handles were typically made of brass or bronze and could be both minimalistic or extravagant in design.

Why Is A Biedermeier Secretary Desk so Special?

Swedish Biedermeier furniture is highly sought after today due to its timeless elegance, high-quality craftsmanship, and warm, natural aesthetic. The secretaire was a central piece in 19th-century Swedish homes, offering both storage and a functional workspace in a truly stylish form.
